Panel Van, Kombi, Day Van or Camper: What’s the Difference?

October 7, 2026

If you’re looking at buying or converting a van, you’ll quickly come across terms like panel van, Kombi, day van and camper.

There’s plenty of crossover between them – and one person’s day van can look suspiciously like somebody else’s camper – but each is generally designed around a different type of use.

The good news is that a standard van can also provide the starting point for something much more tailored to you.

Panel Vans

The panel van is the familiar workhorse.

Typically built around a large enclosed load area without rear passenger windows or seating, panel vans are designed first and foremost for carrying tools, stock and equipment.

They’re used across virtually every trade and industry imaginable and provide an excellent blank canvas.

For commercial use, upgrades might include ply lining to protect the interior, durable flooring, LED lighting and additional sound deadening.

But that same blank canvas is also why panel vans are so popular as the starting point for leisure conversions.

Add windows, insulation, lining, flooring and other interior upgrades and a very different vehicle begins to emerge.

Kombi Vans

A Kombi sits somewhere between a traditional van and a passenger vehicle.

They generally combine additional passenger seating with usable load space behind, making them particularly versatile for people who need one vehicle to perform several roles.

During the week, that might mean carrying equipment for work. At the weekend, it could mean loading up bikes, camping gear, dogs or the family and heading away.

Because passengers are spending more time in the rear of the vehicle, upgrades such as insulation, sound deadening and quality interior lining can make a particularly noticeable difference.

Day Vans

The definition of a day van is a little more flexible.

Generally, it’s a van adapted for leisure use without necessarily becoming a fully equipped camper.

You might have comfortable seating, carpeting or suede lining, improved flooring, windows, lighting and insulation, perhaps alongside removable furniture or a simple sleeping arrangement.

For many owners, that’s exactly the appeal.

You get a comfortable vehicle for days out, festivals, cycling trips, weekends away or simply somewhere to sit with a brew when the British weather inevitably changes its mind – without needing a full camper conversion.

Camper Vans

Campers take the leisure concept further.

Depending on the conversion, they may incorporate sleeping accommodation, storage, cooking facilities and other equipment designed to make longer trips possible.

Before all of that goes in, however, getting the fundamentals right matters.

Sound deadening, thermal insulation, suitable flooring and a properly finished interior can form the foundations of a comfortable camper conversion.

Even if you’re planning to complete other elements yourself, professional lining and preparation can give the project a much better starting point.

Which One Is Right for You?

It really comes down to what you need the van to do.

If it’s purely a work vehicle, durability and practicality might be at the top of the list.

If it needs to carry passengers as well as equipment, a Kombi-style setup may make more sense.

If weekends away appeal but you don’t need a kitchen sink permanently attached to the van, a day van can provide an excellent middle ground.

And if you’re planning longer trips and want the van to become a genuine home away from home, a camper may be the goal.

The important thing is that the interior is built around your use of the vehicle rather than somebody else’s idea of what a van should be.
